ORDER OF THE LILY AND THE EAGLE HISTORY OF THE SPIRITUAL FAMILY Narrated by Deon ----------- HISTORY OF THE SPIRITUAL FAMILY Written on the basis of notes, kept during a narrative by Deon. Under the light of a flood lite mansion, many cars were stopping. Those who stepped out of the cars, and walked towards the imposing front door, were the cream of Athenian aristocracy. Moreover, this was evident from the extravagance of their attire. Hearing the voice of their hostess, who cheerfully welcomed the other guests, they hurried up the marble staircase, which was adorned with carpet and bourbon palms. Inside the spacious and opulent living room, there were always friendly faces who welcomed newcomers with compliments or innocent teasing. The friends of the house, divided into small groups and couples were chatting quietly, to pass the time until the dance began and the following feasting and song that would make for a pleasant evening. After a while, a well-trained orchestra began playing a catchy waltz. To begin with, young couples started and little by little, nearly all the onlookers joined in with the various dances. At some point, the lively voices and carefree laughter heard during the breaks, and the general cheerful expressions of the faces, indicated that the party had kicked off . Suddenly, an old man of medium height entered the room without any introduction. There was no one with him to say anything. He proceeded with a steady step and sat down somewhere with an exceptional calmness. He had a goatee and rather white hair. Page 1 ---------------------------- And he made his impression or magnificence, without showing any pride, and the mysterious style, that he took from time to time, was without pretence. Many secretly looked at the stranger who sat in his place, silent and serene. And they quietly asked one another, to learn who this strange fellow was. But, no one knew anything about him. Two curious women got up to find the hostess. And afterwards, they informed the relevant people, that she did not know what his name was, nor what he did. However, the day before when she met him at a house of her friend, she also invited him, out of courtesy to her. So, for a few minutes the noise of the gathering ceased. However, after a while a circle formed around the mysterious man that slowly grew and came to life. To the various questions that were put of him, he answered willingly, politely and with an exceptional readiness of spirit. And his words were calmly positive and very meaningful. Some wanted, for the hell of it, to embarrass him. But he, always unperturbed, managed to express in a few simple words, not the usual things, and was able most importantly, to immediately convince them that they were right. One after another, they began to understand that they were dealing with an extraordinary phenomenon and so an atmosphere of admiration was created around him. Everyone listened with a religious devotion and while everyone was thirsty to learn details about him, nevertheless, no one dared to ask him about it. Such was the respect that was inspired by his personality. Counter to the mental and psychic pleasure that most of the guests found in the company of the unknown sage, the hostess was afraid her soiree would fail that she had planned with - - - Page 2 ---------------------------- recitations, songs, the Lancers# and other amusing entertainment. Meanwhile, she invited her guests to the buffet, where they all ate and drank better than they could imagine. After the revelry, the lady of the house saw with great pleasure that the stranger had chosen to sit in a smallest room and, as if he had read her thoughts, avoided at first developing his ideas in the new circle that formed around him. He even encouraged young people to have fun. When the surroundings were thinner, a well-dressed gentleman who had not been previously involved in the discussion, said to the stranger with the goatee. "I followed you attentively from the beginning, but in spite of my good will, I confess that I did not understand very much. Why, because your words are vague and cryptic. But unlike the others, I cannot admit that you are a mysterious person." He stopped in order to make the same impression with his introduction. The old gentleman did not show the slightest agitation. "Do you think so?" he started to ask, without answering directly. "As you will know yourself", added the deaf gentleman, "we live in a positive time, and therefore, when someone says something, and even as a kind of mystery, you must be able to prove it." "Can you tell me specifically, what you mean?" "Gladly. I heard some of your listeners say that you are an extraordinary and mysterious man. Someone even went so far as to give you divinatory power. But I will not agree with them, except when I have tangible evidence. Not words." "Would you like to hear something serious about yourself?" asked - - - # Les Lancers, is a square dance performed by four couples, particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Page 3 ---------------------------- the unknown questioner looking him in the eyes. "Yes, unequivocally", said the aristocrat man courageously, while those in attendance watched this discussion with keen interest. "Well . . . . . . . . . . " A hesitation made him stop short. However, after a while, he took on a serious look and his gaze was fixed on his questioner with a strange expression. His attitude indicated he had something unpleasant to announce. "Since you insist on having tangible proof of what I said", he said looking at his watch, "within the next 48 hours you will find yourself in jail." These mysterious words made a great impression on all those present. And many spontaneously look at the time. "It is ten twenty", the lady of the aristocrat was heard to say in a muffled voice. "Do not be afraid my dear" he said in vain, as he approached her. If he said anything else, he could have given it some meaning. But this prophecy caused much laughter. Everyone smiled. Only a young man still watched the mysterious man as if magnetized. The stranger turned to him. "And you, my young man, will come to meet me within 24 hours". The young man felt a thrill of excitement. Exactly at this moment, he said joyfully, "I was wondering how to meet you. Where do you want to meet?" There is no need to set a time and place. A strange coincidence will bring you to me. Everyone received this new revelation with some shock. For everyone understood that it was intended to confirm the previous one, - - - Page 4 ---------------------------- thus giving an indirect answer to the bitter irony of the gentleman concerned. At that moment the hostess appeared smiling at the door and politely invited those gathered around the stranger to listen to the recitation of a young lady. Then came the turn of the Lancers. Those who did not take part in these charming dances, with its pleasing end, watched with pleasure. The fun, which had regained its first high spirits, remained lively and pleasant until the early hours of the morning. So, little by little, the guests started to come to the best of impressions. - - - - - - - - - - - Mr Constantinos Metaxinos# was a well-known and reputable merchant of Ermou Street. Together with his wife and a close friend, were being taken by car to his mansion. Passing by Panepistimiou Street, the three of them were frozen in silence for a moment. "What do you think?" said the lady, pondering on the old man’s words. "Poor thing, do you remember his so-called prophecies? " "Don’t you realise he made them up to impress us?" "What can I tell you, I am fearful that something unexpected will happen and they will be verified …" "But for God’s sake", her husband interrupted, "you do know that I have dealings with justice?" "Do not worry Mrs Metaxinos," said the friend. "Prison has no place in the life plans of our beloved Constantinos. I do not believe that he will become another person in 48 hours", he added laughing. The married couple laughed. Meanwhile the car stopped. They got out of the car - - - # Metaxinos means the silky one. Page 5 ---------------------------- and all three proceeded up to the front door. I would ask you to please to enter the house one your own", said Mr Metaxinos to his wife. "Why?" the woman asked in surprise. "We have some business to do", he replied, turning his gaze to his friend. "I will accompany him to his house and return shortly." "Since you find it necessary to work at this hour, there is nothing left to say but good night", she said with evident displeasure, and left without shaking hands with his friend. They walked for a few steps. "We made the poor thing unhappy", said the friend first. "That does not interest me at the moment. What I want from you is that you tell me, as a good friend, what you know, what you understood about the issue we raised this evening." "What do you mean exactly? Speak clearly and tell me how I can help to you." "As I told you back there", Constantinos began saying, "I have been very upset lately, with attitude of Revos# towards my wife. Wherever we go, he is there. And as you have noticed, he exaggerates his compliments and his dancing. He starts flirting openly with her and in front of me. Oh, my patience is exhausted now and you will hear soon enough that I cut off his bad cough. The scoundrel." "Above all Constantinos, no impetuousness. The issue is very delicate one and it requires a great deal of caution. Before taking any action against him, it seems to me that we should clarify if the blame lies with him." The good friend, to deter the offended husband from - - - # This is not a typical ‘Greek’ surname. Possibly Revos is a French surname. Page 6 ---------------------------- acting hastily and without consulting anyone, considered it appropriate to confuse the issue of responsibility a little and to offer his assistance willingly. «I can't believe my wife started it and that she is chasing him.» «I do not believe that either. However, he could not go far against her will», he was forced to add in order support his conclusion. «That's right», said Constantinos. And looking at his friend in the eyes, he asked with concern, «So you have guessed it ...... « He did not finish his thought. The other, however, understood enough and immediately sought to reassure him a little. «I cannot rely on assumptions, or on appearances. It is absolutely not possible for a girl to only desire to please and not assail a man who does no harm other than to admire her. Be careful, Constantinos, not to wound her honour, unless we are sure that he is the real culprit». They found themselves outside the friend’s house. Constantinos said goodnight to him a little nervously, but he did not head off for his mansion. Mechanically, he followed Stadiou Street. In his head, which ached and throbbed as if he had a fever, his friend’s words were spinning around persistently. If she didn’t want it, who could have a special relationship with her? What should he imagine then? That his wife took simple satisfaction in the tokens of the admiration of Revos? Or that one day you would inevitably fall into his arms? What if that had already happened? he thought. What if the two of them had been alone somewhere and spent hours together at the expense of his honour? Their love affair that his exuberant imagination - - - Page 7 ---------------------------- saw vividly, immediately upset him. His face took on a wild expression and his face became stern. Unconsciously, he walked faster, more nervously, while in his flustered mind, blurred thoughts were constantly born and mingled with confusing images. At one point, it appeared to him that he was grabbing them both by the scruff of the neck, that he hit and injured them, but not seriously, while he was dragged off to prison. However, this nightmare vision shook him deeply and paralyzed him. He stopped short. This last image reminded him-of the mysterious character and his prophecies. «No», he whispered. «His prophecies will not be fulfilled» Constantinos said to himself. And with every thought, he found himself in accord with the recommendations of his friend, not to cause a scandal without positive proof. After his anger had subsided a little, he further tortured himself in trying to discover when Revos had started chasing his wife. But his memory did not help him much. However, by combining the various facts he had, he tried to figure out whether their relationship had reached a place where it should not have gone. And from time to time, he found blame in their various behaviours, as for their story of love? he did not let himself settle long on those suspicions. Because of the pure love that his wife felt for him from the beginning when she was still an innocent girl, as well as her devotion after their marriage, Constantinos had countless proofs. With the memory of the various bits of their beautiful romance, his face softened a little. Now he doubted even more that this etheric creature with her psychic and spiritual beauty, who had inspired the only insane feeling in his life, could be able of trampling on their mutual vows of everlasting adoration, and to cruelly deceive him. Page 8 ---------------------------- Moving on, he unwittingly reached Syngrou Avenue, near the Fix brewery. He stopped and looked at this watch. It was twenty to three. He was shocked at the thought that his wife, who was waiting for him to return quickly, would be worried about his delay and he hurriedly made his way home. Wherever he went, at times thinking propitious things and at others disagreeable things, he was surprised to hear his name. He turned his head towards the voice, and saw a relative approaching him. «What happened to you Mr. Metaxinos? Your wife is a mess due to her fear and confusion, and others ..... « «Good, where did you see her?» «I was in your neighbourhood and there I heard Mrs. Metaxinos was very worried that you were so late, while you had told her that you would return quickly.» «And then what happened?» asked Constandinos with interest. «Hearing the neighbours begging their husbands to fly in different directions to find you, I and two others immediately went off in different directions. Are you going home now Mr. Metaxinos?» «Yes, do not worry I am going there right now. And many thanks for your kindness in going to such trouble.» He politely said good night to him, took a nearby car back to his home, while planning how best to justify his delay. - - - - - - - - - - - The following day Dimitris Fronimakos# was constantly in motion from nine thirty that morning. He was a strong intrepid young man who was rather tall. His appearance was attractive. And his dark brown eyes showed he had considerable intelligence. He wandered - - - # Literally, the well behaved ‘small’ one. Page 9 ---------------------------- the streets and squares and passed through the various centres of Athens, carefully looking everywhere with great attention to distinguish, among the many faces he met, the imposing figure of the mysterious person from last night, who gave him an appointment without him specifying the place and time. He returned to his house shortly before two only due to fatigue. After eating, he picked up a book and lay down on the couch, but he could not concentrate on reading. In front of him was constantly flying the image of the old gentleman with the goatee. Early in the afternoon he took to the streets again and returned at nine thirty without meeting the desired sage anywhere. He went and took his supper and after a while came back down still having his mind on the unknown one. However, at the same time he thought with disappointment that the prophesy of their chance meeting had not taken place. To dispel his disappointment, he thought about visiting a cheerful and affable family that resided at Piraeus Street. However, once the doorbell of the friend’s house rang, his mind did not stop being aware of the strange person he had met. When the door opened, Dimitris stood opened mouthed with surprise. Before him was the mysterious man. Why are you surprised?» he said with a smile. «Didn’t we say that you would meet me all of a sudden. But please, come in.» «Yes ... but ...» the young man started to say with difficulty. «I know. You were going somewhere else, and you’ve come to me by mistake, because it is the time of our meeting and I have been waiting for you.» His eyes widened with surprise, and he was unable to articulate one word. «There you go, I have even prepared tea with two cups, as you can see .............. » Page 10 ---------------------------- Dimitri threw a strange look at the tableware and after in a trance, at the extraordinary man who he was very fortunate to meet. «Sit down my dear Mr. Fronimakos.». «How do you know my name?» the young man asked with renewed agitation. «Did you hear it from someone, or maybe ....» Again, he looked at him in the eyes. «It was not difficult for me to find out for myself that your name is Dimitrios Fronimakos.» «So, you know my first name as well? How do you manage to find out such things?» «You will find out one day», the old man replied with his usual indifference. «In the meantime, would you like a liqueur?» «Thank you.» While the keeper of the house filled two glasses and they drank them, Dimitris took the opportunity to explore the living room a little. The furniture was simple, but also curious. On the back of the sofa an Egyptian eagle was artfully carved while the sides were decorated with a sphinx. The sides of the armchairs also had a sphinx. And the other furniture also had unusual decorations, the representations of which, attracted attention. «Have you lived in Athens for many years?» the young man asked. «Since they were built», his conversationalist replied naturally. «I confess, I don’t understand anything.» «Slowly-slowly, you will understand that as well.» The mysterious words of the old man-made Dimitris unable to say anything. So, he remained silent for a few moments with his eyes lowered, while his hand mechanically caressed the sphinx on the armchair. Page 11 ---------------------------- A little while after drinking the liqueur, the visitor felt dizzy, and his head leant back. He cast a frightened glance at his companion and realized that the same thing was happening to him. He tried to react, but he was immediately plunged into darkness and fell into a stupor. Soon he felt the magical caress of an unearthly maiden who was constantly around him, as if she wanted to embrace him. But this sweet pleasure, which he would have liked to have endured for a long time, ceases abruptly and he realized that he had become a deer. The old man appeared next to him, half-naked like a savage, and began to caress his neck. He then led him to a magnificent garden. When their stroll was over, the old man turns and hugs him, saying to him, "farewell until we meet again, my child." - - - - Then he sees himself half-naked like a savage. He is trying to build a fire in a cave. Meanwhile his aged companion, half-wild, also appears. He has a bow and arrows on his shoulder. He appears to be returning from a hunt. When the young man comes out of the cave, he notices near the entrance, the deer that he saw previously, which is now dead. «We will skin it», he hears the old man say, «we will roast it and then we will eat it». The image again fades abruptly to give way to another. - - - - The young man finds himself in a mine where he struggles to extract a chunk. Suddenly there is a rock and he is crushed. Once again, the old man appears who is eager to - - - Page 12 ---------------------------- clear the rocks in order to open a path. And thus, he survives. - - - - Dimitris is in battle now, hiding behind some rocks. Near him he hears the old man's voice. He turns and sees stuck in his chest, the enemy’s arrow. «My son, I am dying», his companion says to him in a strangled voice. «Farewell». - - - - On a lush green plain near some blossoming trees where the birds chirped happily, the young man with big black eyes sits melancholically holding his head in his hands, his elbows resting on his knees. The old man slowly approaches him and said in a sad tone … «I’m here, but unfortunately, we will be separated again my child. I see you love her.» «Oh yes, very much.» And he watches, over there, a maiden cutting flowers that she puts in a basket. The young man is sorry that the attraction of the beautiful girl forces him to separate from his aged companion. The other moreover, realises that he cannot stop, hug and kiss him. And he then sees him shyly going over to his beloved. - - - - Yet another strange image is presented in front of him. The old man, surrounded by many people, is holding a pickaxe and seems to be waiting for someone. After a while, he looks at the young man and he invites him over. «Come over here», he says «to witness the reconstruction of the city that will illuminate and enliven the Earth. Come and be present for the foundation of the Parthenon# ». # The current temple to Athena Parthenos was rebuilt on an older temple of Athena that was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BCE. The word ‘parthenos’ is a Greek word derived from the word ‘παρθένα’ that means ‘virgin’. Page 13 ---------------------------- The young man walks slowly under the beneficial shade of a grove of trees, thinking about the futility of people's lives. After a while the old man turns up. «I see that you are thinking philosophically about the worldly. Alas» ... he says, shaking his head expressively. After hesitating, he continued. «Truly what a pity, that lethe# is not one-sided for man. And how much happier he would be if he always had memory in his spirit, with lethe only in his soul …… it would be better if you are a philosopher and that way you will. So, you will come out very advantageous. Goodbye and farewell.» - - - - Now he is walking in a desert. Proceeding forward, he distinguishes the Sphinx of Egypt and approaches it. There, near the famous statue, stands someone dressed as an Ancient Egyptian priest. By his face, he recognizes the old man. «So, my son, you came here to meet me? Go everywhere, look and study», he said. And once again it vanished with the scenery. - - - - The old man presents as a general. He is happy and laughing for the victory won and congratulates his officers for helping him. To each of them he gives a courteous compliment. In his turn, he greets the young man who is an officer and he says to him … «Are you here my son? See, we are still friends in war, as well as in the periods of peace. Greetings.» - - - - The young man is now wearing lavish amour and resembles like Alexander the Great. Everyone around him respects him. He sits and talks to his teacher who is none other than the old man. While he listens - - - # Lethe – oblivion, forgetfulness. Page 14 ---------------------------- attentively to his words, he suddenly finds himself on the cross and sees with horror, that his old companion is also crucified opposite him. Yet he feels he has enough strength to withstand this torment. A pikeman holds in his hand a resinous firebrand§ and is preparing to burn the young man. But the old man shouts at him. «Stop. I was the one ordered to be burnt.» The pikeman turns in confusion and once he recovered, he begins to carry out the awful command that he had been given. Now the old man's body sizzles chillingly and the smell of roasted flesh spreads around .... Just before he surrendered the spirit, the burnt man manages to say to the young man ... «I leave you my son, companion in pain and witness of the truth.» - - - - What follows is an appalling scene. The enemies manage to climb the ramparts of the fortress and pour furiously spilled into the town, where they kill and are savagely killed. For the besieged are determined not to surrender the inheritance of their fathers alive. One by one, all the generals fall heroically, and alone - clad in the insignia of the Byzantine emperor - continues to fight. He looks around him and sees with horror enemies everywhere. At any moment they would kill him and then would humiliate him. Suddenly a strong soldier appears in front of him. In his face he recognizes the physiognomy of his comrade. «No emperor. You will not fall to an agar’s# spear, but to mine.» He replies, «Farewell my son», and is killed with one blow. § ‘Αναμμέο’ from ‘άναμμα’. A light, kindling. # ‘αγαρηνού’ – of agar. Agar refers to the biblical story of Ishmael, where Hagar is considered to be the ancestor of the Arabs. Here, agar therefore refers to blow from a Turk or Muslim Arabs spear. Page 15 ---------------------------- With the fading away of this scene, the series of apparitions presented to Dimitris came to an end, which were sustained for only as long as the influence of his faith. When he opened his eyes, he was holding his head with his hand, while it was supported on his knee. He saw that his elderly companion had the same posture. On seeing him, he recovered completely and spontaneously said. «Master ........ « The old man laughed. «My child, it is now time to rest. In 24 hours then». The young man got up and said his goodnight. As he went down the stairs, he heard the mysterious man call to him laughing. «And be careful not to knock on any other door again ........» - - - - - - - - - - - It was approaching midnight when Dimitris found himself in the street. For a moment, he went to go to his home. But because of the psychological state he was in, he thought he could not sleep easily. And he arrived at the Zappeion#. There he lay down on a secluded seat. Around him was silence. And bit by bit, he sank into the recollections of the events of the last few days that had troubled him. He past quite some time without being disturbed by any walkers. Suddenly he heard a noise. He looked carefully and distinguished near the railings of the Royal Garden, two people leaning forward and moving their hands. «They hid something», he said to himself, when he saw that they had moved a stone. He remained pinned in place until the suspicious ones left and were far enough away. He then got up and silently approached the railings. Out of curiosity, he dug under a large stone and after a while he was lucky enough to discover a small bundle. With the light of the first lantern, he excitedly opened the small package and found - - - # The Zappeion is a building next to the National Gardens of Athens in the heart of Athens, Greece. It is still used for meetings and ceremonies, both official and private. It was inaugurated in October 1888. Page 16 ---------------------------- inside two short promissory notes, as debts to Revos. Now Dimitris had not the slightest doubt from the notes, that they killed the unfortunate Revos the previous night, and had thrown his body in the Ilissos#. The watch, ring and wallet with some banknotes were left on him in order to mislead the police - as it did at first, and the newspapers wrote that the motive for murder was not theft, but personal passion, and that a well-known figure in Athenian society was a suspect. The young man considered that he had a duty to hand over the package to the police. At the first police station, he was referred to the investigator, who was still at work. He explained to him in a few words how he happened to find the parcel and gave it to him. Seeing that the investigator holding Revos’ promissory notes, he immediately became another person out of joy. «Sir, I thank you very much and I commend you for your intercession. With these notes I am sure that the perpetrators of Revos's murder will be found. Moreover, his debtors are not unknown to justice. It was for this reason you found me in my office at this hour. You know, this crime has upset the public and they are looking forward to the arrest of the criminals.» At the same time, he rang the bell and ordered the policeman who appeared, to bring Mr. Metaxinos to him. «To satisfy you further», said the interrogator, «I will release the man in front of you, who we unjustly arrested as a suspect. One moment now, I will take care of the gentleman's paperwork.» He started searching his papers. The thoughts of Dimitris were pulled deeper to the evening’s mysterious person who foretold the unexpected imprisonment. A little later, into the office came - - - # The Ilissos river flows through Athens and is completely covered apart from a short section. In 1900 it was uncovered and by 1948 it was more or less completely covered. Page 17 ---------------------------- Mr. Metaxinos with a pale and frightened face. The interrogator immediately stopped writing and got up from his seat. «I called to you here, Mr. Metaxinos, to tell you with great pleasure, that you are free to go home.» Mr. Metaxinos was unable to say one word due to his excitement. «And I am very sorry», he continued, «that during your interrogation you were unable to dispel the suspicions that were raised by some of the police evidence. But fortunately for you and for justice, things have changed, thanks to this gentleman.» He pointed to the young man who was standing to one side watching with emotion. Mr. Metaxinos turned his head and only then realised that there was another person in the interrogator's office. He immediately ran to him and shook his hand. «Thank you so much, sir. You saved me. You restored my reputation. And I will be indebted to you for the rest of my life.» Mr. Metaxinos said goodbye to the interrogator, waited for the other to do the same, and then placed his hand around his saviour’s waist and they went outside together. Hardly they were outside when Mr. Metaxinos asked his partner impatiently how he managed to save him. And to excitedly learn the details that interested him. «I cannot understand», said Mr. Metaxinos at one point, «what kind of power does that mysterious man of the evening have to have foreseen my imprisonment, which was not expected at all, and with such mathematical precision ....... « «It is a remarkable phenomenon», he emphasized. «Don’t tell me Mr. Fronimakos, that you met him as he told you?» «Exactly after 24 hours and in the strangest way .....» Page 18 ---------------------------- I would very much like to hear about that incident. The young man was willing to please his companion and, answering his various questions, recounted in a few words the most interesting points of his meeting with the stranger. «What kind of man is he? said Mr. Metaxinos again with admiration. I have never met such a fellow before. At first, I confess that I did not believe his words. But now that I am convinced that he is really an extraordinary phenomenon, I feel the need to meet him again, to apologize to him if I offended him and to thank him, because I have the idea that I owe my deliverance to him.» «I will visit him in the evening and if you wish, I can pass by your house.» «Thank you so much my friend. I am obliged to you.» «However, I don’t understand», Dimitris said somewhat abruptly, «how come they suspected you as Revos’s murderer.» «I still do not know what happened», said Constantinos. And after thinking for a moment or two, he continued. «However, I imagine that a policeman learned that Revos had recently had an affair with my wife and that I, after the soirée, did not return to my home but withdrew with one of my friends to discuss the matter. The fact that I continued to walk alone for a long time, due to my distress, would definitely play a role in my arrest. A thing which worried my wife and made the neighbours and two other gentlemen to take to the streets and search the various centres to find me.» «That explains the situation», said Dimitris. As they chatted, they arrived in front of the Metaxinos’s mansion. Now I will see what a mess I will find my wife in. The two young men, having agreed to meet up in the evening, - - - Page 19 ---------------------------- said their cordial farewells. - - - - - - - - - - - Dimitris came in the evening and took Constantinos from his house. The two of them had a strong desire to meet the mysterious person they met at the soirée … Indeed, in order to not miss the opportunity, Constantinos left his wife in bed. Dimitris was the first to enter the house of old man, with the goatee. Introducing his new friend, he wanted to justify his visit. But the homeowner did not let him finish. «Ah, I was waiting for both of you.» «But I», said Constantinos in astonishment, «came all of a sudden. And of course, at the last moment I had serious obstacle.» «However, I was sure that you would come and besides, I prepared you a cup.» The two young men glanced curiously at the tea set. And they saw that he really had three cups. Constantinos was speechless for a moment from his surprise, while Dimitris smiled expressively. «Now Mr. Metaxinos believes absolutely in your powers of divination.» «Forgive me sir, for my initial doubt, and if I said something I shouldn’t have.» «I did not demand that your attitude should be different,» replied the strange one with his usual calm. «The exact verifications of your prophecies,» said Constantinos again, «made me imagine that you are not created like other people, but that you have something supernatural.» The old man smiled. «My dear, I have nothing supernatural about me. I have merely been studying nature for many years and my conclusions make me - - - Page 20 ---------------------------- speak a little differently from the others. While drinking tea, they talked about various issues. In this way the murder of Revos was discussed. This issue upset Constantinos a little. The host was thoughtful for a few seconds. Afterwards, he looked strangely at Constantinos while his expression became serious. - «Τhe tragic end of this man is going to cause you another hard ordeal.» - «So, do you have any evidence that his relationship with my wife was advanced?» the young man asked fiercely. - «No, my dear. Believe me that your wife has never ceased loving you and being a faithful wife.» «But then, what bound to happen to me? Maybe .....» - «Yes,» answered the old man. «Her heart is very weak and unfortunately, she will not be able to withstand the successive shocks of the murder, your imprisonment and after, the scandal that broke out at the expense of her honour.» - «So then, I will lose her?» the unfortunate man managed to articulate with difficulty. - «I thought it best to warn you, so that the blow does not come all of a suddenly.» - «But how could I live without my beloved?» said Constantinos, bursting into tears. - «Even in our greatest trials,» replied the strange fellow inspiringly, «we can find relief and consolation. Otherwise, I will show you the means. Now go, for her hours are numbered.» - «Oh my God.» Constantinos shouted heartbreakingly and was flung bolt upright out of his seat. Dimitris also spontaneously stood up to escort the pathetic young man home. Page 21 ---------------------------- The afternoon of the next day, Dimitris found his friend in tatters, physically and mentally. He had not closed his eyes all night, to be ready at any moment to help the sick woman along with the nurse. But despite all the care and persistent efforts of the family doctor and the most famous cardiologists - who consulted and employed all the means of science – the heart of his beloved ceased to beat, just before noon. The consoling words of Dimitris and the other friendly people made him think, what a treasure he had lost, and his eyes filled with tears. As long as he saw his wife lying motionlessly in the floral casket, with her closed eyes and mouth, remaining serene like a cold statue, to the outburst of pain of relatives and friends, he whispered every now and then in despair. «I lost everything.» The image of her as she was a few days ago flew before his eyes: beautiful with all her characteristics and charms. And his psychic anguish became ever greater as he remembered the assertion of the mysterious man that she had never ceased to love and be faithful to him. Very many people attended the short-lived woman to her final resting place. And the countless wreaths of natural flowers made her funeral even more magnificent. Two or three times that evening, once Constantinos had a chance, he let his mind deal with the fatal and combine murder of Revos and the untimely death of his wife. In fact, the mystery of the forecast made the thing even more concerning. He was immersed in these thoughts, head in his hands, when he suddenly saw in front of him the tall gentleman with the - - - Page 22 ---------------------------- goatee. He rose abruptly in bewilderment. «My friend, I came to start what I promised. Let us go and talk in private, said the strange man while looking at Dimitris.» They entered a room where there were no others, and they closed the door. The mysterious man pointed to the two corners for the young men to sit, and he took a seat opposite them near the door. Without delay, he began το speak in a sweet tone about various related and interesting things, which immediately caught his attention and they uplifted# Constantinos. For his part, Dimitris listened with enthusiasm and wonder to those unconscious words that came out of the mouth of their unknown friend, serene, simple, but also profound. «Everything that you say», Constantinos said at one point, «I find very logical and agree with you that there exists another life. But in this world, I was once sentenced not to see again the extraordinary creature that I first loved whose beauties and joyful manners made me extremely unhappy in life.» Instead of answering, the old man smiled expressively and turned his head towards the door, as if waiting for something. After a few seconds, the newly deceased was suddenly in front of them, but all life and grace. She was wearing a beautiful spring-time dress and a charming hat, which made her even more beautiful. She took a step forward, made a bow and ran to Constantinos. She fell upon him, and she whispered something sweet in his ear and immediately embraced and kissed him. To begin with, Konstantinos remained petrified, sitting there with eyes staring. When he raised his hands, he saw the apparition calmly pull away and disappeared. «Oh. Mysterious stranger.» He stuttered as soon as he recovered from - - - # the word ‘ανεκούφιζαν’ Page 23 ---------------------------- his surprise. «You made me see her again with the dress and hat that she was so fond of lately. You made me rehear from her mouth the unforgettable words « My dear Dino » and retry one more time her embrace and sweetness of her kiss.» Unconsciously, he hid his head in his hands and his gaze was fixed on a spot on the floor. Dimitris thought it well to put an end to this scene and asked the old man. «What punishment now befits the murders of Revos?» «I presume they deserve forgiveness.» «Are they worthy of forgiveness?» Dimitris repeated with surprise. «Yes. Who can know if these are the criminals,» said the strange man mysteriously and he saw that this matter troubled Constantinos, who got up from his seat. The others did the same, first Dimitris and then the host. «Dimitris, stay if you want and join him later.» Afterwards, he turned and looked at Constantinos. «Do not be late going to bed. When the body is relaxed you will recover a little. And slowly you will be comforted,» said the old man, gently touching him on the shoulder. - - - - - - - - - - - The next morning, Constantinos felt the need to be close to the lifeless body of his wife. Passing through Anapafseos Street, he saw a falling sheet. He caught it and approached the door, that was oblique to him, to return it. But hardly had he had climbed a few steps he stopped. There was a quarrel going on inside the house. From the yelling and bangs, that that he heard confusingly, he understood that a man was beating a woman while another man was trying to separate them. «You should look after my things next time» Constantinos heard - - - Page 24 ---------------------------- the savage voice of a man. The woman apparently wanted to justify herself, but the result was that she received a face slapping and cried. Then the other male voice was heard to say. «Leave off giving her a beating, the papers will not be found. Better to come and search, do not mislay anything or we will be lost.» So, Constantinos was forced to leave the sheet on the stairs, and he set off for the cemetery. There, he found the gate closed. With a bribe he passed inside. The guard watch him from a distance, just in case. The inconsolable young man wept like a child over his wife's tomb. After a while, he remembered he had a meeting with his friend Dimitri and he walked away feeling bad. On the way back Constantinos took the other side of Anapafseos Street. As he approached the placed where he found the sheet, he raised his head and with great surprise saw on the balcony of the same house, a young woman who looked very much like his beloved. He felt the desire to know her, so he headed over. He was pleased to see that the sheet was still on the stairway. In this way, he would present himself at the unfamiliar house with more courage. But as soon as he climbed a few steps he stumbled on something soft. He bent down and grabbed a coat, while his gaze fell on a bloodstain. He was nailed to the spot, horrified. Now he had no doubt that the people who lived inside and quarrelled that morning, were nefarious. He hurried back down the stairs and went to meet Dimitris at the Zappeion’s Voustasia#. His good friend was already there waiting. To justify his delay, Constantinos related what he had seen at the suspicious house in Anapafseos Street. «What do you think, should we notify the police?» he asked Dimitris. # Prior to 1920, sheep, goat and cattle were kept throughout the Athens area. This was then banned in 1920 due to public health reasons. The Cowsheds of Zappeion, ‘Βουστάσια του Ζαππείου’, does not exist anymore. It was, most likely, a build near the Zappeion, that was a place for people to meet up. Denoted as a cowshed, possibly due to how the building was constructed. Page 25 ---------------------------- «I am of the opinion that the criminal elements should be arrested to limit evil.» After a while, the two young men led the security officers to the house of the suspects and they stood nearby. In order to be inconspicuous, they continued walking and they returned to the police station to learn the outcome of the investigation. As they were slowly walking along, their elderly friend suddenly appeared before them. At the same time, they heard a loud fuss behind them. They turned round curiously, and the two young men watched with keen interest the escort of two wild men to the police station, by the well-known gendarmes. Constantinos wanted to tell the old man what had happened. «I know, my friend. I know», said the mysterious man, shaking his head characteristically. His two companions stopped abruptly and looked at him astonished, as if they were hearing amazing things from his mouth for the first time. - «These are the murderers of Revos», said the old man again in the most natural style. Now the surprise of the young men reached its zenith. - «And the other two? ... Where were they arrested»? Dimitris asked in a choked voice. - «Those are worthy of forgiveness», replied the strange man, smiling expressively. - «I don’t understand anything» confessed Dimitris. - «Nor me» added Constantinos. «Let’s go and I will explain the mystery to you», said the old man. «The two debtors to Revos, who were considered by the investigator guilty - - - Page 26 ---------------------------- of the crime, were released an hour before dear Constantinos as they had paid their debts on the very day of the murder.» - «Then why were the promissory notes removed?» said Dimitri with some doubt. - «Because that morning they had asked Revos to allow them a discount on their bill. But he remained adamant. So, for one reason or another they called him out of indignation an awful ‘loan shark’ with other harsh words, which were heard by others waiting at the entrance of the office. However, in the afternoon one of the wives went and paid the two promissory notes so that there would be no protests the following day». - «So why did they hide them»? ask the anxiously person again. - «Simply, because after the murder, they were afraid that the police would find out about their morning fight and consider them guilty by finding the promissory notes on them. But unfortunately, you found yourself spoiling their plans» said the old man, looking at Dimitris with a smile. - «How would I know» said the miserable one with sorrow painted on his face. - «These are professional killers and they were paid by a man who could not pay his debts. He took this step because he was sure that the cruelty of Revos would destroy him materially and morally». - « Something one hears», said Konstantinos shaking his head. - «Indeed», the old man confirmed, «mysterious things happen - - - Page 27 ---------------------------- in this world. Many times, we doubt the things that we see and hear. Then our perception is too narrow and we do not understand that all our actions, from the most insignificant to the most serious, are interconnected and related to the actions of our fellow men. Anyway... Go now and see to the release of the two innocent men». A few hours later, Dimitris and Konstantinos were hanging out in Syntagma Square with the two released prisoners. Their names were George Petridis and Yiannis Agnos. Dimitris explained with sincerity that he had unintentionally hurt them and asked for their forgiveness. In turn, Konstantinos said that he too was released from prison with the murder of Revοs. Little by little, their conversation became friendly. In the meantime, the old man with the goatee suddenly appeared before them, and joined the company. From the respect that Dimitri and Constantinos showed him, the two others paid more attention to him and were fascinated by his words, which were sometimes enlightening and sometimes playful. After midday they got up and the old man invited all four young men to dine with him the next day. Everyone happily accepted. Even Constantinos, who was reluctant to be a guest in his house. Dimitri offered to meet with the two young companions beforehand, to go together. So, Dimitri took the opportunity to speak to them in a few words about the old man’s exceptional nature. That evening, Constantinos went for a walk to take some air. Returning home, he thought it would do him good to see the old man for a few minutes. So, he went there and a touching surprise awaited him there. This time - - - Page 28 ---------------------------- the old man did not open the door for him, but that morning’s woman who looked like his beloved. At the sight of her he was shocked for a moment, and became tongue-tied. To allow him to recover a little from his surprise, he told the old man : - «I found poor Maria alone and unprotected and I hired her to take care of my household». - «I have no doubt, Master, that you knew among other things, my desire to meet her in person and perhaps that is why you preferred her» ….. - «It was necessary for her to come here» answered the mysterious man vaguely. When Maria reappeared bringing the coffee, Constantinos observed her as closely as he could and was amazed and sceptical in the face of such a resemblance. After a while, he was obliged to return home where various relatives and friends were coming to keep him company. With his last impression, as well as the others, Constantinos passed the second day constantly fixated on his grief. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The next evening the four young men gathered around their unknown companion. After a while, they had a light dinner of some cold food that Maria had prepared, then they retired to the living room. Strangely enough, the old man was reserved and serious without his usual interesting conversation and his delicious wit and jokes. Dimitris and Konstantinos who knew him better, understood that they were hearing something exceptional again from his mouth and waited for him to give direction and life to the gathering. Page 29 ---------------------------- For a moment they were speechless and thoughtful. Finally, the host raised his head crossed his arms on his chest and looked at each one inquiringly. - «Tonight, to start I will show you why I made you come here. From today, we will start researching and studying the problems that interest you, in order to arrive at, with God's help, conclusions capable of guiding and raising you to the level of people who know what they are doing». He stood close to each and look at them by one. - «No matter how simply I speak, I know that you will find my words mysterious and unintelligible in many places. That is why I will always be at your disposal to remove all your questions and dispel your doubts. But before you embark on your new calling, I would like each of you to tell me if you have ever thought about what you are, where you came from and where you are going. Of course, not materially but spiritually, because in the future we will not be interested with our material existence. Who will answer first?» With this question, the four were in a muddle with discomfort showing on their faces. The mysterious man left them in their predicament for a while and then said with a smile. - «Since no one decided to speak, I will ask you Constantinos, what are you, where did you come from and where are you going?» The young man blushed and it was some time before he could open his mouth. - «I do not come from a prominent family. But I have managed to create a fairly good social position and from that point of view I am satisfied.» Page 30 ---------------------------- The old man did not hide his disappointment. He then asked the others. The two newcomers to the circle did not respond any better. Only Dimitri managed to say something that had some depth and substance. A short silence followed. «My friends, do you imagine that someone was created only from matter and that the main concern is the satisfaction of their belly and senses? Do you think the purpose of one’s life is to rise by any means to a prominent position, in an absurd and unjust society? That you find his conscience is fine while all their efforts end in success, and that have no moral and rational basis? And when death comes and their beloved ones rush to bury his filthy body in the Earth, what do you think? That everything ended so ingloriously?» He paused to catch his breath, while the four youths had the impression that they were hearing truths which lay dormant within them and which were now being awakened by the inspiring and evocative words of their teacher. «No, my dear ones», he continued, «man is not a simple creature in nature, destined to live once as they please for a few years and then to perish ingloriously, having previously contributed to the perpetuation of the species. If you pay some attention, you will make sure that our every action is the result of thought, will and decision. This spiritual mechanism of our actions is wonderful and it is worth the trouble to concern us more. As well, it is not a waste of time to know what the soil is that assimilates our body after death, what the Earth is, our planetary system, the heavens and generally what Nature is. You would understand all this better if each of you studied themselves, because you must learn that MAN is a true microcosm. MAN #, - - - # MAN refers to each and every human being whatever gender. Page 31 ---------------------------- my friends, is endowed with an extraordinary Soul and a personal spirit, which other creatures do not have. And yet almost all beings who are called conscient, unconsciously leave these two wonderful gifts uncultivated, whereas otherwise, they would be the factors of their real progress and evolution. Stopping short, he looked at everyone with a smile and he continued. - « But there is also something that you will not find on your own, no matter how much you study yourself. And that is, apart from your physical parents you have spiritual parents and I am the spiritual father of all of you. And your spiritual mother, do you know who she is? ... It's Maria.» The end of the mysterious man's speech was so unexpected and strange to the four young men that, in spite of the esteem they held him in, they looked at him in such a way to make sure if he was still in his right mind. – « I will try», said the old man with his usual calmness, "to put you out of doubt that my revelation has given birth in you, I would like you to beforehand to write down, now that I have given direction to your thoughts, the purpose of a person’s existence on Earth." With the last word he immediately got up and opened an adjoining room. - «Go in». The four visitors entered without saying anything. «Here, as you can see», said the host again, "here is everything we need. Sit apart, think for yourselves, and write what you think good is». And he closed the door on the way out. Page 32 ---------------------------- When the young people were alone, they looked at each other in bewilderment and then glanced around the small and rather round room with another door at the back. The furnishing was simple but elegant, and everything had the colour of the sky. Without saying a word, they took their seats and for a few minutes they remained thoughtful. Dimitri was the first to start writing with many breaks. The others were unable to concentrate. Slowly, one after another forced themselves to write something down, but what they wrote did not satisfy them. At least that was how it appeared. Whoever finished remained in their seat, with a distressed expression, while outside the room the old man's footsteps could be heard from time to time. When the last person put their pen down, it made a great impression on them that the door opened and the mysterious man appeared. He was more serious than before. - «I consider it unnecessary to collect your writings, because I know very well that you wrote nothing of value. Nevertheless, I let you take this trouble, so that you could understand where you are at the beginning of my teaching. As you can see, it is not your knowledge that made me choose you over others. Heimarmene# wants to make you partner of my purpose. But let us have a tonic before we move on». After offering each person a very tasty liquor he then he sat down with them and they relaxed. - In the depths of the aeons in the unknown of time, there was a single kingdom that we could characterise as being otherwise happy. Because without exception, all the beings who lived there lived harmoniously with their King, his beautiful only Son and amongst themselves. That is, it is impossible even for the most imaginative human spirit to envision their happiness. Once, the two Lords of the Kingdom decided to procreate, with their spiritual - - - # ‘Ειμαρμένη’ – Heimarmene - is a goddess and being of fate/destiny in Greek mythology - in particular, the orderly succession of cause and effect, or rather, the fate of the universe as a whole, as opposed to the destiny or fate of individual people. She belongs to a family of similar beings of destiny and fate, which have given us various modern concepts such as Aesa, Moira, Moros, Ananke, Adrasteia and Pepromene. Page 33 ---------------------------- power. And two new beings were born. Doros from the Father and Dora from the Son. The first became a handsome, tall and strong man, whose main characteristic was Wisdom. Dora was also not lacking in gifts. She was created a dreamy beauty, destined to personify and embody Love. The King thought it good to unite these two privileged creatures with the bonds of Hymenaeus# and he announced his decision. Thus, when the appointed day arrived, the whole Kingdom joyfully celebrated the event. Do you want to see this celebration too? Look, high up there. And he pointed with his right hand to the wall. In that very place a magnificent sight was presented. The majestic and imposing King smiled with satisfaction at the harmonious union he had created, as well as at the jubilation felt by all within earshot to him. At his side, his Son also beamed with joy. A little further away, amongst the clouds, were a charming group of the tightly entangled couple, while in front of them pipers played and some gorgeous nymphs danced ethereally... The speaker continued his historic parable. The King then commanded Doros and Dora to go round the whole Kingdom and enjoy the riches of their union. Aeons passed since that time and Doros felt the need to bear a child. And one day, when he held Dora in his arms, he gave birth to a child Nous, from the right side of his chest. Take note of this image. They all turned and watched with lively interest as the first scene faded away and in its place the birth of the pair. Consequently, to complete the happiness of Doros and Dora Nous came, a plump and beautiful infant, which they held proudly on their knees. Again, aeons passed the old man continued. The relationship of our couple, - - - # ‘Ὑμεναίου’ – Hymenaeus. 1: a nuptial song, 2: marriage, wedding, nuptials. Page 34 ---------------------------- from where they were in the spiritual {realm}, started to become more and more aesthetic#. So once Dora conceived with Doros she gave birth to another child, Voulos. Again, the parents tasted the same joy and happily boasted about their children. Meanwhile, Dora eagerly awaited another birth and in a short while she gave birth, as you will see, to Rοmοs. The four young ones scrutinised with the same interest, Doros and Dora who were occupied with the new birth that had blessed them a chubby infant. The child was exceptional. On his first appearance, he showed that he was very strong and when he first stood up, Doros lit up. - «Then followed the birth of my beloved ones. This is how Fronimos and Logos came into being. Logos was born from Doros like the firstborn Nous. Then in their order, Arithmitis and Mimitis came. He is the seventh and last son of Doros and Dora. And as you will see in the last image, both his birth and he himself were exceptional». Truly. This time Dora was in pain, sweating and suffering a lot, which distressed Doros. That is why he tried to relive her a little using any means possible. After much suffering, finally out came an unsightly and phosphoric being. However, the father cherished and cared for him with the same affection that he felt for his other children. At that moment, among clouds a small star appeared in the background of the image. – «Yes, his star». Said the old man. And after a little, after it disappear, the image continued. The King watched with pleasure the sons of Doros and Dora. And at once, he gave them the right to govern over the subjects - - - # In relation to the triple constitution, ‘αισθησιακός’ is translated here as ‘aesthetic’ rather than ‘sensual’. Page 35 ---------------------------- of his Kingdom. Aeons passed and the seven brothers ruled in perfect harmony. Τhe happiness of all the subjects was absolute. One day the ill- made Mimitis found himself at the border of the Kingdom. From there, he noticed with curiosity that in the distance the boundaries of another expanse began. This put thoughts into his mind for the first time. On the one hand, he was fascinated with the idea which was born within him. On the other hand, he was overcome by fear in the face of venture that ought to be done. This struggle lasted a long time. Finally, his enthusiasm won and he made the decision to carry out his grand plan. When he met with his brothers, with his argument he persuaded all of them to agree with him, that instead of being simply governors, it would be much better for them to created their own kingdom in the other country, where they would be absolute rulers. So, one day the seven Giants took with them all their subordinates and went to occupy that other place. The King was naturally displeased with the inappropriate behaviour of the seven brothers and ordered the gates of the Kingdom to be closed, in order to regain its characteristic harmony. Because Dora was constantly crying about her children ceasing power, and its undesirable consequences, as she slept and had Doros stood guard over her. Meanwhile in the new land, a terrible struggle began between the elements of nature and the rebels, who were later on also lost {caught} between each of them. The Titans and Giants fought furiously for aeons. In the end, the rebels defeated and wiped them out while leaving their trace in Matter, into which they fell of their own free will. Again, aeons upon aeons passed. Bit by bit, Matter slowly evolved and refined. Eventually, they appeared on its surface, the descendants of the Giants that were, on the contrary, small and weak. However, from the very beginning they realized - - - Page 36 ---------------------------- that they were not ordinary beings. In time they remembered their superior origin and from then on, they began to make efforts to free themselves from the shackles of limited Matter, to ensure an eternal and happy life within the vast Kingdom where their generators were born. With forbearance, one day the King told Doros to wake up his wife, to go to their children. Dora was very pleased by this decision and took with her a troop of the King's subjects, and went down to the Material World to help her errant children her advice and comfort them with consoling words. Yet more aeons passed. Doros felt the need to reunite with his wife and children and begged the King who immediately gave permission. Where Doros descended, he saw from afar Dora sleeping under a tree and he ran with longing to be with her. Just before they met, a flame came out of each of them that united them. In order not to bore you further, my dear friends, I will not describe to you the emotion and joy that the couple felt. I will limit myself only to say that the union of the Generators also revived their children and together they all tried to please the King by prepare the ground for him to send his Son to them. The old man's story was over. However, the four youths were still fixed in their seats and silent. To get them out of this passivity, he told them. - «Think about what you heard and try to understand why I told you that I am your spiritual father and Maria is your mother. Now come, let us complete our dinner». He got up first and Dimitris expressed a desire for their spiritual mother to sit at the table. The idea please him and - - - Page 37 ---------------------------- the others, and the host was willing to please them. The old man again had not many words, but the four young men were all reticent. Peering at the strange pair at the table, they remembered various details of the story they had heard. The guests did not stay long after dinner. When they found themselves alone, they began to feel different about themselves. They found new powers within them, but these were not unknown to them. It seemed that they had them before and thought that they left them unused. When they perceived those powers that gave them new life, they remembered with emotion the evening of initiation mystery#. - - - - - - - - - - - Two days later the four young men met with the old man and Maria again. This evening the host was effusive. At one point he even promised to show them another room, which was always closed. Dinner was not yet over when there was a knock at the door. The guests were worried that the visitor would deprive them of the pleasure of new revelations. On the contrary, the mysterious old man smiled. – «Dimitri, go and open for our friend». And turning to the right he took from a drawer what was needed for a man to eat. The three young men waited with curiosity and impatience to see the new visitor. – «Hello Dimitri». – «Welcome Nicholas». – «How come you’re here?» asked the newcomer. – «Why do you ask ‘come here’?» asked Dimitris in turn. – «I had to come at this time.» – «Come in», said Dimitris closing the door. # ‘μυσταγωγία’ – initiation into divine mystery, mystagogy, divine service. Page 38 ---------------------------- - «Are there others inside?» Nicholas asked fearfully. «Because my outfit .....» The poor man really was in awful trouble. He wasn't wearing either a hat or shoes ... His shirt was old and his trousers were in an even worse condition and looked like they were not his. - «It doesn't matter», Dimitris said sympathetically. We are us and us. Come, he's waiting for you». And he took him by the hand. - « Good evening. And forgive me that I came like this ........» - «Dear Nicholas be quiet», said the old man, «and we know who you are. After all, you're not in a strange environment. Come, sit down and eat». For a moment, the three young men remained ecstatic before the pitiful state of the newcomer. However, the words of the mysterious man were enough to turn surprise to sympathy. Thus, Nicholas ate with a little more courage. In the meantime, the door was knocked again and Dimitris got up immediately to open it. The old man smiled vividly and turned to the left this time, fetched a plate and everything else that was needed. Suddenly another impetuous fellow came rushing into the room. He shook hand with everyone as if they were known to him and then sat near to the host with whom he started to converse in English. The new visitor was a blond and stocky Englishman with a moustache and regular features. He was laughing, effusive and quite charming. And his gaze was not surprised at anything. He wore a traveling suit, shoes and a cap#. He held a bag which held his under garments and whatever else he needed. - «Did you stay in a hotel?» asked the host. - «Once I learned that you had asked me here, I didn’t waste any time, my respected Master». # ‘κούκο’ – typically translated as ‘cuckoo’. However, we can assume that the text is referring to a travelling cap/hat, possibly a flat cap. Page 39 ---------------------------- - «Did you come from England?» Did you come from England? asked Constantinos. - «Just a moment, my friend. Let me to deal with this small amount», said the Englishman, pointing to his plate, - »and I will tell you what you want». He was the first to burst into laughter for his manner. The others laughed heartily. - «Your explanations my dear Jimmy», said the old man, «will be left for another time. Tonight, we have something else to look forward to». Having his mouth full the Englishman could not speak. That's why he raised his shoulders and hands expressively as if to say: What can I do for you? It's not my fault. Everyone laughed again. The Englishman's movements and grimaces, his words and jokes had a childlike naivety that showed an innocence. In their excitement with this entertaining one, for a moment they forgot their host's warning that their gathering had a purpose. - «Let's go to the blue room now», said the mysterious man, when he saw that the Englishman had finished eating. Everyone stood up as if electrified and the Englishman was the first to sit down in the other room, waiting with indifference for the others to do the same. - « Let's have a liqueur before we start. Dimitris , can you bring it please. It is above the right drawer. You know » ..... While they drank the mint liqueur that Maria served them, they exchanged a few brief words. The old man stood up. – «Come with me, Maria. Your sons come soon». The woman automatically followed him. Furthermore, this is how she spoke and acted since being close to this mysterious stranger. The house seemed strange to her, and his conversations with his companions gave rise to many questions, which she - - - Page 40 ---------------------------- Decided, out of shyness, not to ask. There was only one thing she could not restrain in herself: was the smile that came to her when she heard the friends of the house, who were the same age or older, always calling her "mother". Maria and the old man entered the other room. This was the most paradoxical of all as it had seven corners, on which the names of the zodiac signs were engraved. The ceiling presented a part of the sky with a few stars and supported a large electric globe. At the eastern part the room was made round# like the sanctuary of the church. Two opulent armchairs, like thrones, were placed there. In front of them and slightly to one side, were two large candlesticks placed in grand candlestick holders. Above the thrones and near the ceiling was painted on the wall, a double-headed eagle with wings spread wide. Under its feet, one could read the two initials of Christ "X P". Finally, opposite the thrones were arranged seven seats, in a semicircle. The mysterious man closed the door of the room and told Maria to sit on the left throne. He stood a short distance precisely across from her. He crossed his arms on his chest and stared at her with his eyes. With this gaze Maria felt a strange, overwhelming sensation and slowly began to lose consciousness. Then he cried out loudly and imposingly. - «Dora». At one moment, the woman was in an uncomfortable position. While she was looking at him ecstatically and a little scared, she noticed that his form began to be surrounded by a phosphorescent colour and change its aspect. – «Dora», the mysterious stranger called out again in the same imposing manner. Maria was no longer able to contain herself. Her head - - - # ‘στρογυλευω’ – round, made round Page 41 ---------------------------- tilted back and her eyes closed. And before long she began to track mentally her patron's past forms as well as her own. Now her facial expression, along with her smile, showed the elation of her soul. The change of her companion’s forms, stopped with the one that Doros had two days ago in the blue room. But in the end, after various changes, she arrived at the form of Dora. In the meantime, her spiritual function also changed its working and a new climax now shook her being. - «Do you know me, Dora»? The woman's lips moved for a moment, but the words ceased, in order to answer more expressively her the radiant happiness. Doros began to transform back again, until he reached his form as the old man with a goatee. He then went into the blue room where the six young men awaited him. - «Undress, my dears», he said. Immediately he went out the door. They were all surprised and looked at each other, because they found his instruction strange and incomprehensible. Jimmy was the first one to undress without the slightest hesitation. When he was left in his underwear, he nodded expressively at the others, as if asking them: ‘Should I take these off too?’ They did not know how to answer him and they began taking off their clothes one by one.
